Open loops: the customers you lose to silence
2026-10-27 · 4 min
Ask a business owner how they lost their last good customer and the answer is rarely a competitor. It is a silence. A question that sat in a thread for a week. A quote that went out and was never chased. A promise made on a call and not written down. A customer who said “check back next month” to a team that never did.
We call each of these an open loop: a customer thread where the next move is the business’s. There are four kinds.
1. A question not answered
The customer asked something and the thread went quiet on your side. Often because the answer needed someone else, and the handoff happened in a corridor.
2. A promise not kept
“I’ll send the revised price tomorrow.” Written in your own words, with a date, and then buried. These do the most damage because the customer remembers exactly what you said.
3. A quote with no reply
Sent, read, silence. The nudge is a known, boring, high-return piece of work that nobody enjoys. It is also the one kind of follow-up most businesses would be comfortable automating, after a few days.
4. A date the customer named
“Call me after the 15th.” “We’ll decide next quarter.” The customer told you when. The date arrives and nothing happens.
Find yours this week
Open your Sent folder and your inbox for the last 30 days. For each customer thread, ask one question: whose move is it? If it is yours, that is a loop. Most teams of five find between twenty and forty. Then ask what each one is worth. That number is why we built Augurfield.
Augurfield reads the same 30 days, finds the loops, and writes the reply for your OK. Book a demo.
We’re opening to a few teams at a time.
